Theresa MacKnight

2024 Winner

“I was delighted to hear that I was the recipient of the JL Visual Art Award. This award will help me in a concrete way as I strive to advance my practice and create a new and experimental body of work. I want to thank the generous sponsors: Ingrid Mueller, Maureen LeBlanc, Cat LeBlanc, Ann Manual, Wendy and Wayne Hallihan, and also, the JL Visual Art Award jury.”

Theresa MacKnight is a lifelong visual artist and educator living in St. Andrews, N.B. She works mainly in painting and drawing, with a concentration in oil painting. She is active and supportive in her arts community, making connections through volunteerism and teaching.

MacKnight’s work is usually series-driven and often inspired by a strong sense of place that springs from her roots in Southern New Brunswick. Between 2020 & 2022, her “Habitat Narratives” series was inspired by experimental work with trail cameras, resulting in a series of narrative oil paintings that included animal and human figuration and experimental colour. In the winter of 2024, she completed and exhibited a series of paintings, “To Sunbury Shores, with Love,” in honour of the Centre’s 60th anniversary. This work marked a shift in colour and intention as she investigated interiors that explored the art and nature history of Sunbury Shores.

MacKnight exhibits her work regionally and has completed several residences, including a summer creative residency at the Beaverbrook Art Gallery. She also received the 2020 Marjorie Nae Wilson Mentorship Grant from the Sheila Hugh McKay Foundation.
